Mrs D Hall's contention (Oxford Mail, September 5) that the parish rate at Sunningwell was zero in the year following the decision by the Law Lords to rename the Glebe a village green may be accurate.

However, this is irrelevant since it was reasonable to expect that the rate would be lower after the previous higher rate to fund the parish council's campaign to show that the Glebe Field had been commonly used by parishioners for more than 20 years.

Mrs Hall now claims that, because my tenancy of the Glebe for more than 20 years was not mentioned by the Queen's Counsel at the hearing, then it was of no importance.

What is fundamentally important is the truth in this matter.

The parish council at that time - Mrs Hall was a member - misled the Law Lords into accepting that the Glebe Field had been commonly used for more than 20 years.

Any parishioner living in Sunningwell at that time knows that this is untrue, but allowed themselves to be convinced by the parish council that its campaign was right and just.

The Law Lords' ruling to redesignate the Glebe as a village green was based on incorrect information.

The result is an overgrown and unsightly area, little used by the parishioners, if at all. To call it a village green is a misnomer - not, I am sure, the pleasant sight the Law Lords had anticipated.

I just wish they would view it today when I feel sure they would regret their decision, perhaps even overturn it.
