PRIMARY school children took a trip to the past yesterday, as archaeologists showed them historical objects dug up in their town.
The pupils, from St Edburg’s School in Bicester, were given lessons by Wessex Archaeology – the firm behind excavations on the Kingsmere estate in 2008.
Archaeologist Katie Card, pictured with pupils Cairan Garan, Henry Shortland and Molly White, let the children touch the pieces of Roman pottery, animal bones, and part of a 250,000-year-old stone tool found on the site. The youngsters had to guess what they were.
She said: “It’s important for the children to be aware of their local history. It is nice to be able to show them that with real artefacts, and to make it more real than it would by just reading a textbook.”
She added: “It makes history come to life.”
