OXFORD is known the world over for its student culture.
But what is less recognised is the other side of the town versus gown divide.
Students bring an immeasurable benefit to the city and that should never be forgotten.
However, there is also a serious side to the issue which must be addressed with urgency.
Residents in East Oxford and Headington have long fought against what they say is a rising tide of noise and parking issues caused by students.
Anyone doubting the level of their concern just needs to look at the extraordinary lengths they have gone to to fight their corner.
The number of Freedom of Information requests, phone calls and collected data shows this is an issue they will not ignore.
Now, after years of campaigning, it seems the city council is taking their concerns seriously.
The stakes are so high they could – if taken to the ultimate level – delay the use of new buildings.
Although that seems unlikely, it shows how seriously this issue must be addressed by those in authority.
