It's great to be writing about wine again in The Oxford Times. Though, this time around, I've teamed up with The Oxford Wine Company and The Oxford Times in a very exciting joint venture to form The Oxford Times Wine Club.
The primary aim of the club will be to provide you, the readers, with some great deals on a range of mixed cases of wine, personally cherry-picked by me from The Oxford Wine Company's comprehensive list of more than 1,000 wines.
Every week, I will bring my experienced palate to choose a different set of exciting and individual wines, which I think are truly exceptional quality and great value for money. Each time, the wines will be different in terms of colour, style, region and price. That way, there'll be something of interest for every wine lover and every budget.
The wines I intend to choose are not going to be the usual boring brands that you see on so many supermarket shelves. Instead, I want to bring you hand-crafted and individual labels with a real sense of place and character. I want these wines to give genuine drinking pleasure, but I want also to take you on a voyage of vinous discovery.
However, all that is just for starters. The Oxford Times Wine Club will also build in a discount on all of the wines to make them even more enticing. What's more, we also deliver them to your door absolutely free of charge, providing you live within a 30-mile radius of Oxford.
In other words, you get great value prices, quality wines and the convenience of having them delivered directly to you. If that sounds like a good deal, that's because it is.
And there's more. Unlike some wine clubs, there is no joining or membership fee. Nor is there any obligation to buy wine every month. All you have to do is buy whatever takes your fancy, whenever you want to. Moreover, if you don't like any of the wines, we also offer a no-quibble guarantee of a full refund for any wines that fail to meet your expectations.
Essentially, The Oxford Times Wine Club wants to take all the hassle and risk out of buying wine so that you can shop with confidence, convenience and pleasure. That's why we have set up a straightforward ordering service so that you can buy on-line, over the phone or by cutting out and mailing the relevant coupon.
For our very first offer, I've lined up four cracking wines which definitely deliver the goods and are modestly priced at an average of just over £5 apiece. The first is the 2005 Domaine de Vieux Lazaret Cotes du Ventoux from France's Rhone Valley, situated in the heart of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It's also steeped in history as it dates back to the 18th century when it belonged to a silent order of monks. But believe you me, there's plenty to shout about this superb wine.
Next up is the Navajas Tinto 2005. Last year was also exceptional in Rioja, as this gorgeous red demonstrates. Again, this is a family-run winery in the village of Navarrete in the Rioja Alta which places it right on the route of the pilgrimage to Santiago della Compostella.
Then we have two whites. The first is the Domaine de Mage's Sauvignon Blanc from the Cotes du Gascogne in South-West France. The wine is made by the ebullient Yves Grassa who owns Domaine de Tariquet. Although the estate is more famous for its superlative Armagnacs, my view is that its wines deserve plenty of attention too.
Last but not least, is a real find from Sicily. This wine from the Cusumano estate is made from two rare and unusual grape varieties - Grecanico and Catarratto and was a big hit on BBC TV's Saturday Kitchen. Once you've tasted it, I'm sure you'll understand why.
As you can probably tell, I'm extremely excited to involved with the new The Oxford Times Wine Club. And once you've tasted the wines we have to offer, I very much hope you will be too.
