LAST MONTH police halted plans for extended hours at a Park End Street bar.
Now they want to skewer a proposed new kebab shop.
Former city council safety chief Saj Malik has applied to open a Mediterranean and Turkish restaurant and takeaway that would trade until 4am.
But the plan has been condemned by police and council bosses as they fear it may increase alcohol-fuelled violence.
The takeaway is proposed at the former Eat As Much As You Like Chinese restaurant in Park End Street which had opened until midnight.
Both Thames Valley Police and a city council planning officer have urged councillors to reject it next week.
Mr Malik was until this summer the council’s executive member for safer communities and still represents Cowley Marsh on the city council and East Oxford on Oxfordshire County Council. He declined to comment.
He is a business partner in the plan along with Rusul Asam, who runs the Bodrum takeaway on Cowley Road.
Police say Park End Street has a “high level of crime and disorder incidents” with 69 assaults from August 2010 to July this year.
Up to 2,000 people spill out of bars and clubs after 2am, the force said, putting a high demand on officers.
A late-night takeaway would have “severe impact on community safety”, a letter from crime prevention adviser Lesley Nesbitt to the council said. It added: “The proposed extended operatinghours would give people a reason to congregate and remain longer in the area than they would normally do.”
The takeaway would become a “honey pot drawing people to it rather than dispersing and moving away”.
A council officer’s report said it would attract “intoxicated, rowdy and potentially disruptive” revellers and “increase the opportunity for violence and anti-social behaviour”.
Park End Street’s Royal Oxford Hotel said: “We suffer from noise problems being so close to nightclubs and late-night bars. The last thing we need is a takeaway that opens late. ”
In August, we reported that a bid by restaurant Las Iguanas to sell alcohol to 2am instead of 12.30am on Thursdays to Saturdays failed after police concerns.
The council’s west area planning committee will make a decision on the takeaway plan next Wednesday at 6pm at Oxford Town Hall, St Aldate’s.
The public are welcome to attend.
