Sir – I am pleased to see Eric Pickles has found some money for weekly bin collections.
Oxford City Council will certainly be applying for some of the cash.
Of course we already have weekly collections of food waste. And we are anxious to extend that service to Oxford’s many flats. But at £750,000 per council Pickles’ pennies certainly won’t bring back old-style weekly dustbin collections.
It costs Oxford City more than £3m a year to deal with our recycling and general rubbish. Our fortnightly collections have cut costs, increased recycling and reduced waste all round. In fact we throw away less per person than most cities in Britain. So I shall be interested to see how much money Mr Pickles manages to send Oxford’s way.
