The traditional delights of an English afternoon tea tickled the tastebuds of tourists, thanks to Students at Oxford Polytechnic.
Students and staff, pictured above in 1982, spent a day baking a host of Bath buns, Eccles cakes, gingerbread men and other teatime treats. The delights were then taken to a tourism promotion in London aimed at emphasising the reputation of English cooking.
The polytechnic’s contribution to the exhibition was masterminded by lecturers Helen Peacocke and Danny Stevenson, who had worked together on a book about English tea specialities.
Ms Peacocke said: “We made 11 different regional specialities, and we had a stall at the exhibition, offering people a taste. It was to help people realise the incredible differences bet-ween the English regions.”
