But that does not mean women need not take some prudent cautions, especially when walking home late at night.

It is not worth foregoing a taxi home for the sake of a few pounds.

And, if you are worried about a friend, walk them home or make sure they get a cab.

The spate of attacks at the beginning of the summer was worrying and the latest incidents do little to settle the nerves.

But there is something we can all do to make sure there are no further victims – take some basic precautions.
