An Oxford newsagent is to walk to – and then up – the highest mountain in England and back to Oxford in a five-week trek for charity.
Dan Goymour, 38, is to camp along the way and do the journey, which could be more than 600 miles, without the use of a map.
He is to begin the trip from his home in Addison Drive, Littlemore, on Sunday and begin the marathon trek to Scafell Pike in the Lake District.
He is planning to take only basic equipment, cook with fire and water and sleep under a canopy rather than a tent.
Mr Goymour is taking time off from his job at Tim’s News, in High Street, Oxford, to complete the challenge and he hopes to raise more than £3,500 for Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre.
He said: “I am looking forward to the challenge, particularly route finding as I am not using maps.
“Sleeping under a canopy and using wood fire are things I am familiar with and enjoy.
“There is the possibility of consistent rain but I have the right equipment to cope.
“I am not particularly worried about being alone at night in unknown places, but if I were female I would be concerned for my personal safety. Women live with that all the time.
“The help the charity provides is extremely important. Sexual violence happens far more than most people realise. The figures are shocking. I would do anything I could to help.”
The Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre supports women and girls affected by sexual abuse or rape and anybody supporting them.
“Staff at the centre can also take the first call from male victims and help point them to other organisations which can work with them.
