Oxfordshire Mind and Oxford United FC are calling for the involvement of local organisations, groups and individuals to show their support for World Mental Health Day, do something different and have fun doing it! Mind is holding the second annual ‘one in four’ Legged Race across the Kassam Stadium pitch at half time, during the OUFC home match on Saturday, October 8.
It’s completely free to take part, and participants will receive a complimentary ticket to the OUFC v Bristol Rovers match.
As many as one in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. This event is an opportunity for local people to enter a team of three into the race and show their support in tackling the stigma surrounding mental ill-health 9 out of 10 people with a diagnosed mental health problem have experienced discrimination as a result of their illness. Oxfordshire Mind aims to raise awareness, dispel the myths and tackle the fear and stigma that are a barrier to so many in need of support.
Kelvin Thomas, Chairman of Oxford United said: “The 1 in 4 Legged Race sends an important message: any one of us can be affected by mental health problems, even sports stars at the top of their game. The more that this is recognised, the more people will have the courage to speak up and get help when they need it.”
Three people are required to form a team and be available on the afternoon of Saturday, October 8. Any individuals who don’t have a team but would like to take part should also get in touch as there may be opportunities to join up with others.
