Sir – The county council has abandoned its plan to switch off street lights in the early hours because the financial savings in doing so under new energy tariffs would be minimal (Plans to switch off street lights halted, September 15). This will strike many as a short-sighted decision. The council has an obligation under Carbon Reduction Commitment legislation to cut its carbon emissions, and switching off 28,000 street lights between 12.30am and 5.30am every night would make a small but significant contribution to this objective and lower the council’s carbon tax bill. The county council should reconsider its decision.
