The average cost of a hotel room in Oxford has risen by five per cent in the first half of this year to £103 a night, according to latest figures.

The price increase bucks the national trend, with the nationwide figure falling by one per cent to £82 a night in the same period.

The Oxford price hike, from £98 in the same period last year, made the city the sixth most expensive UK destination featured in the Hotel Price Index compiled for the Hotels.com website.

Visit Oxfordshire director Susie Golding, said: “We have noticed an increase in numbers of visitors, both British and from overseas, at the Tourist information Centre in Oxford.

“It’s simply a matter of supply and demand.”

The appeal of the city also led to an overspill effect which boosted prices in nearby towns such as Chipping Norton and Witney by up to 22 per cent.
