THE driver for a gang of card skimmers has been jailed after going on the run for four years.
Ioan Gherasim was one of six people who came to Oxford in June 2007 and attached an electronic device to a city-centre cashpoint. He returned to his native Romania while on bail and was only picked up in July this year after being caught drink driving in the UK.
Prosecutor Cathy Olliver told Oxford Crown Court yesterday, the 26-year-old defendant was part of a group who attached a card-skimming device to a Natwest ATM in Cornmarket Street at about 7pm on June 16.
She said one of the members of the group loitered around the ATM with a camcorder in a satchel to film people entering their PINs and used a Bluetooth transmitter to beam information back to a receiver.
The group were intercepted as they left the Gloucester Green car park at about 8pm. Florin Soloman was jailed for 42 months in 2008 after admitting conspiracy to defraud. The four others have never been caught.
Gherasim, of Aldborough Road South, Ilford, Essex, was jailed for a year.
