A GROUP of students have set off from Oxford to Putney to raise money for forces charities.
The team, who are all members of Oxford University Air Squadron, left Brasenose College Boat Club yesterday for the 180km row.
Money raised will go to DecAid, a year long appeal which honours 10 years of conflict in Afghanistan.
The funds will be passed on to service charities BLESMA and SSAFA Forces Help.
Team leader Mark Bates, a maths student, said: “Oxford University Air Squadron feel both proud and privileged that we are able to support DecAid. The work that DecAid does to support our servicemen and women is phenomenal and we are very excited to be able to support this superbly worthy cause.”
Oxford East MP Andrew Smith, pictured with stroke Lewis Travers, met them as they left for London.
He said: “I’m really proud of what they are doing. It is in a fantastically important cause, especially raising awareness among young people and raising funds for a charity that will help people affected by the war.”
The group aims to arrive at Imperial College Boathouse, Putney, tomorrow. To donate to the rowers’ cause visit decaid.co.uk
