THESE young ladies were probably in need of a rest.
They had spent a whole afternoon entertaining themselves and others with displays of country dancing.
After all that energetic activity, they posed for this picture in the Assembly Room at Oxford Town Hall.
The picture was sent in by former Oxford resident Joan Cocks, who now lives at Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.
Mrs Cocks, whose maiden name was Thurgood, writes: “I lived in Oxford for 60 years and although I left 30 years ago, I have always been interested in the city.
“Recently, I was given some Oxford Mails and saw photographs in Memory Lane, so I wondered if your readers would be interested to see this picture. I am not sure of the exact year, but it was around 1936-7.
“Girls’ clubs from all over Oxford met at the Town Hall for country dancing.
“I think it was organised by Miss Terry.
“My club was SS Philip and James Girls’ Club – we met in the church hall in Leckford Road in North Oxford.
“Our girls wore white dresses – most are on the left of the photograph.
“I wonder how many are still with us?”
As we have recalled, Oxford Town Hall was a popular venue for country dancing.
Many of the events were organised by the Oxford district of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
Several hundred children would attend and enjoy themselves on the dance floor.
