I notice that the latest scheme from our city council is to target free leaflets. What a good idea.
Finding an easy target and advertising it as a major step forward looks good and gets lots of publicity, but means nothing.
Like so many council initiatives, it ignores the more serious litter problems.
The greatest creators of street litter are the takeaways and street pub smokers, but controlling this would require real effort.
Promotional leaflets can add to the quality of cultural life in the city (and should be encouraged): walking down a street covered in polystyrene and fag ends does not. If this present project continues, what will be next?
A repeated attack on poster boards, that really would be an easy target.
