The Boundary Commission yesterday unveiled its proposals to rearrange the country’s political map.
The aim is to evenly spread voters and reduce the number of MPs in parliament. A few MPs will lose out and many of us won’t lose too much sleep about it, to be honest.
In Oxfordshire, most won’t see much change, we’ll still have six MPs representing the county.
However, a shift in the city could have had a significant impact on the last General Election result.
It is tight in Oxford West and Abingdon and shifting the city centre Carfax ward back into the constituency may not be good news for the Tories.
The thought is students are Lib Dem voters and they’ll back yellow in the parliamentary seat where the blue majority is wafer thin. But one wonders whether a Lib Dem candidate could rely on the vote of students at the next election?
They may well be disillusioned with the party, who it should be mentioned, have yet to pick a candidate for next polling day.
Our sympathies are with the good folk of Ambrosden and Chesterton – near Bicester – who have been lumped into the Henley constituency.
That seems a carve up too far.
