Four more people from Oxford are racing across Europe in a charity banger rally.

Jo Grant, Mark Willis, Mark Cope and Andy Cousin, who all live in East Oxford, are setting off today on the Scally Rally, a four-day race which will see them cover 1,600 miles from Calais to Spain against 99 other teams all in cars worth less than £100.

The team is named Nine Stone Cowboy after a band Mr Willis and Mr Cope were in. They are taking part to raise funds for the Miriam Hyman Memorial Fund and Helen and Douglas House.

Miriam was killed in the July 7 London bombings last year and ever since her sister Esther, of Cowley Road, Oxford, has been working hard to establish the fund.

As reported in yesterday's Oxford Mail, James Knox and Nick Moorbath, from Temple Cowley, are also taking part in the rally, aiming to raise money for Barnado's and the Oxford Samaritans.

The Nine Stone Cowboy team are friends of Esther's and knew Miriam, so thought it fitting that their cross-continental adventure be dedicated to her memory.

Ms Grant, who works for Oxford University, said: "We thought we should raise money while doing something like this and will be splitting all cash raised equally between the two charities."

They found out about the Scally Rally through Mr Willis, who works in marketing and knows the event organisers.

They will be taking part in an R-registered Peugeot 406.

Ms Grant said: "It's going to be a real adventure - a complete riot - but we're all really looking forward to it."

The team will have to take pictures along the way to prove they have completed the journey. They are also hoping to play gigs on route.
