The first repatriation of a fallen serviceman to RAF Brize Norton will take place next Thursday.

A Royal Marine was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan’s Helmand province yesterday.

The man, who has not been named, was from 42 Commando Royal Marines. His next of kin have been informed.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the marine will be flown to RAF Brize Norton.

His family will be supported at the air base’s new £2.8m repatriation centre, which opened last Friday.

Residents wishing to pay their respects to the fallen serviceman will be able to gather at the memorial garden in Norton Way. The garden will be officially opened at a ceremony tomorrow.

Royal British Legion Oxfordshire chairman Mike Henderson said: “I wish it had never happened but we will be ready to pay our respects.

“I am sure all those who do attend will come and pay their respects in a dignified manner.”

RAF Brize Norton has taken over the repatriation duty from RAF Lyneham, which closes tomorrow.
