THE MAN in charge of Oxford’s recycling has urged Bank Holiday partygoers to make sure they recycle their empties.

City councillor John Tanner, cabinet member for a Cleaner, Greener Oxford, said: “Don’t just bung everything from your parties and barbecues into a black bin bag. We must stop sending valuable materials to landfill which costs taxpayers money.

“My message to residents is please separate out the burnt burgers and bits of bread for your food waste caddy. Cans, bottles and cardboard can go into your blue wheelie bin or box.”

He added: “Food waste sent to landfill creates methane which is 20 times more damaging than carbon dioxide.”

The city council is hoping to push recycling rates above 50 per cent this year.
