Sir, Has Rt Hon Andrew Smith MP apologised? I presume not. It is now common knowledge that the war on Iraq was unjustified and ill conceved.
At the time, Andrew Smith was Cabinet minister for Work and Pensions and came out of the Cabinet meeting that decided on going to war, laughing and joking.
Over the next 14 months he was constantly challenged on his decision and was unable to offer a plausible excuse for the war.
To some it might have appeared that it was more of a matter of looking after his job over a matter of principle.
This is not particularly unusual for a politician, but now when the position he held has lost any credibility some thought it might have had surely it is time for him to apologise to the people of Oxford who he did not listen to.
