We have succeeded in identifying one of the mystery musicians in the picture taken in Oxford in the early 1950s (Memory Lane, August 21).

We already knew the names of three of them - composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, in the middle, Dr Sydney Watson, organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, second from the left, and Thomas Armstrong, later Sir Thomas, conductor of the Oxford Bach Choir, second from the right.

Ivor Harold, of Kineton Road, South Oxford, recognised the man on the extreme left as Reginald Jacques.

Dr Jacques, a respected organist and conductor, was educated at the Queen's College, Oxford, and in 1926 was appointed the college's organist and director of music.

He was also conductor of the Oxford Orchestra Society from 1930 to 1936.

From 1931 to 1960, he was conductor of the Bach Choir in London.

In 1936, he founded the Jacques Orchestra, which he conducted until 1960.

He was honoured with a CBE in 1954. He died in 1969.

The picture was sent in by Mr JLF Buist, who found it while looking through his papers from when he was at New College, Oxford.

But we still don't know the name of the man on the extreme right, or when, why or where the picture was taken.
