IN HER column last Wednesday, your Sassy & Single columnist, Sue Carter, remarks on the hideous Worcester Street car park.
But it was never intended to be that way. Lord Nuffield bought that land on which to build part of his college, with the idea of improving the look of that approach to the city.
Unfortunately, none of that part of the college was ever built.
Originally, Worcester Street went from the corner of the public house in New Road to the junction with George Street, there being a humpback bridge to clear the Oxford Canal approach.
Worcester Street was realigned and the present car park site cleared for building, but then work stopped.
Presumably, Nuffield College still owns this land, and it does seem strange that, whereas most colleges search for new land, Nuffield has left this for so long.
If it is no longer needed for its original purpose, could it not be used as a site for student accommodation? This would be more sensible than building on the important St Clement’s car park.
