A LANDLORD has been fined £3,000 for failing to carry out safety work at his property Aliaz Ali Hussain, of Quarry Road, Headington, admitted three offences relating to the shared house he owns at 18 Crown Street, East Oxford.
Mr Hussain was fined a total of £3,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,910, at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
He pleaded guilty to failing to comply with house in multiple occupation (HMO), licence conditions that required improvements to the property to be made, failing to comply with a legal notice requiring fire safety works to be carried out, and also failing to keep the garden of the property in a safe and tidy condition.
Joe McManners, Oxford City Council’s executive member for housing, said: “We are committed to improving houses in multiple occupation and if landlords fail to carry out their duties to improve properties, then we will take action.”
When Mr Hussain was granted an HMO licence in 2009, he was told to carry out upgrade work to the property.
A new fire door should have been installed, ceilings should have been upgraded, additional smoke alarms were required and emergency lighting and fire fighting equipment should have been made available.
But when officers from the council’s environmental development service visited the house in February last year they discovered that none of the work had been carried out.
They also found an unsafe dilapidated shed full of rubbish and dumped household items.
