David Williams (Oxford Mail, March 26) couldn’t give his wholehearted support to Earth Hour.
Switching off lights across Oxford to save energy, save money and the planet, is so obviously a good thing. But the track record of the so-called Greens in Oxford has been to oppose nearly every sensible environmental initiative. They were against taking buses out of Cornmarket; they even opposed the bus lanes in Frideswide Square, claiming it was a four-lane highway.
Labour is the true ‘green’ party. The last government enacted the first climate change law in the world, while Oxford City Council has cut its own carbon emissions by a quarter in the past three years.
We are now working with the BMW car plant, the universities and many others to shrink the whole city’s carbon footprint.
I was pleased when the Greens supported the Low Carbon Oxford initiative, but now it seems Mr Williams wants to drag his party back to their old ways. He must know the city council is helping to install solar panels all over our city.
Instead of whingeing on the sidelines, Mr Williams and the other Green councillors should join Labour and really make a difference.
Climate change is far too important an issue to be hived off into sectarian politics.
John Tanner, Board Member for a Cleaner, Greener Oxford, Oxford city and Oxfordshire county councillor, Sunningwell Road, Oxford
