Sir – Cyclox agrees with Genieve Boon (Letters, March 24) that parking needs to be controlled, in the Iffley Road area, as in the rest of inner Oxford, to prevent commuter parking. A controlled parking zone already covers the first group of streets, and it is this section of Iffley Road which will be rebuilt starting in May.
This is also the section where a cycle lane in both directions is most important, given the lack of alternative routes.
Daytime parking demand is heavy on one street in that area, but overall there appears to be enough space on the side streets to cope with legitimate weekday daytime demand.
Cyclox would also like to see cycle lanes in both directions on the next section of Iffley Road, when that is rebuilt, probably in 2012.
That may indeed have to be linked to a further attempt to agree a Controlled Parking Zone for the area.
But for the first section, commuter parking is already suppressed, and we do think now is the right time to install cycle lanes.
