WILTSHIRE Police have charged 47-year-old Chris Halliwell with the murder of 22-year-old Swindon PA Sian O'Callaghan, they said today.
Miss Callaghan’s body was found on Thursday on land just off the B5407 near the White Horse at Uffington, near Wantage.
Police had been searching for Miss O’Callaghan since she went missing after leaving a nightclub in her home town of Swindon in the early hours of last Saturday.
Halliwell, a taxi driver from Ashbury Avenue, Swindon, was arrested by officers at an Asda store in Swindon on Thursday and questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder and kidnap.
Police investigating the murder of Miss O'Callaghan are today working to identify human remains found in a field in East Leach, Gloucestershire. Halliwell remains in custody at Gablecross police station in Swindon and is due to appear before Swindon Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.
Thousands of people gathered to remember Miss O'Callaghan at a lantern vigil at the Polo Ground in the Old Town area of Swindon last night.
Hundreds of Chinese lanterns and balloons were launched into the night sky and a two-minute silence was held.
