SUPPORTERS of the closure of the Headington library in Bury Knowle Park, though few, have been primed to give the fact that the library has no lift for the disabled as one of the reasons it should close.
Plans for installing a lift at the side of the building were drawn up a few years ago and the work had been priced.I suspect the reason the lift was not installed was due to the fact that without a lift it would be easier to convince people that the building is not fit to be used as a library.
The cost of installing the lift, given that the council recently allotted £2.5m to refurbish playgrounds, is not prohibitive.
Proof that the Big Society is alive and kicking in these financially difficult days, would be for the council to pay half the cost and for shopkeepers, pubs, cafes, churches and residents to meet the cost of the other half.
In no time at all, Headington library would have a lift that the frail elderly, the disabled and mothers with babies in pushchairs could use.
