ART in the form of a group of 40kg rhino sculptures arrived in Oxford ahead of a year-long project aiming at promoting environmental issues in the county.

The Woa Rhino initiative will see colourful 1.6m long and 1.5m high sculptures located in different spots around Oxfordshire before they are auctioned next spring.

They were delivered to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History yesterday. Their next stop is the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

The two organisations behind the project, Wild in Art and About the Place, want their project to get the community working together.

Businesses can sponsor the rhinos, artists can paint them, and school children can decorate mini versions of them.

The auction proceeds will go to children’s charity Respite nursing for Oxfordshire’s Sick Youngsters (Rosy) and animal charity the Tusk Trust. Project director Oliver O’Dell said: “This is using public art to educate children about the environment and species, raising money for two charities and engaging people in a fun project.”
