OXFORD University has confirmed that Students will have to pay the maximum permitted tuition fees of £9,000-a-year from next year.
But the university said those from the poorest backgrounds would be given heavy discounts.
It said that because of the scale of teaching cuts, Oxford would only get an extra £10m a year through the increased fees, of which £7m would be immediately invested in supporting poorer students.
Students coming from homes where the total income is less than £16,000 would pay just £3,500 in their first year, and £6,000 in years two and three.
