ALL ABOARD for a trip on the river!
Members of the Liberal Club in Grove Street, Summertown, Oxford, packed one of the popular Salter’s steamers to enjoy an outing on the River Thames in 1945 or 1946.
The picture comes from Lynda Keen, of Field Close, Kidlington, whose maiden name was Alder.
She recalls: “The steamer went from Folly Bridge to, I believe, Day’s Lock, near Little Wittenham.
“I am in the front of the picture by the rails with my cousin, Pauline Treadwell – two little girls in white ribbons.
“My father, Sid Alder, is standing just behind me, the smaller of the two girls.”
Among those on the boat were Tom and Ida Treadwell, Horace and Win Treadwell, Reg and Liz Treadwell, Frank Goodgame, Buster Buy, Bill and Mrs Honey, Bill Howard, Mr and Mrs Martin, Cis and Les Waine, Mrs Cooper, Vera Hewlett and Tanto Webb.
Mrs Keen was prompted to write in after seeing the picture of staff at Morrell’s Brewery in Oxford enjoying a coach trip to Southend-on-Sea in the early 1950s (Memory Lane, September 13, 2010).
She writes: “I remember a lot of the faces on the Liberal Club outing but no names – I was only five at the time.
“I’m sure some of the other youngsters on the boat will be able to name others.”
Over to you! Can anyone else remember the outing and those appearing in the photograph?
