FOOTBALL banning orders totalling 24 years have been dished out to Oxford United fans and more will follow, police warned last night.
Oxford Magistrates’ Court set aside a day to deal with 17 United supporters and one Aldershot fan after disorder at two games at the Kassam Stadium this season.
Twelve Oxfordshire men admitted public order offences in relation to the Port Vale and Aldershot fixtures in October.
Eight received three year banning orders. Four others cannot got to games as part of their bail conditions and will be sentenced in February.
Five others denied the charges and face trials next year. Aldershot fan Perry Smith, 44, from Guildford, will appear on January 14.
Prosecutor Carolyn Hitchcock said the most serious incident involved four U’s fans who attempted to reach Aldershot fans in the North Stand after the final whistle.
District Judge Tim Pattinson adjourned sentencing until February and requested the probation service prepare “all options” reports to assess suitable punishments, including prison sentences.
He said: “It may be the that I have to consider suspended prison sentences.”
No physical violence occurred in any of the incidents.
Sentencing King for goading Aldershot supporters as their coaches left the stadium, District Judge Pattinson said: “What makes it a more serious offence is the large number of people present and the potential escalation of violence.
“In situations like this there’s enormous potential for escalation into something more serious than fortunately appears to have occurred on this occasion.”
Evidence was gathered by Operation Buffin, the police unit set-up this season to deal with disorder at Oxford games.
The operation has now ended, but police said more charges are set to be brought.
Officers said their priority was to stamp out trouble among United fans, but action will also be taken against Port Vale and Aldershot fans.
