Sir – Keith Mitchell (December 16) cleverly lists highly emotive choices to set against library provision.

He then goes on to suggest that the Big Society will step in and replace librarians, without pointing out that volunteers could work equally effectively in all of those services he prefers to protect.

Presumably, all the services organised by the county council will be cut in proportion to the total spend of each. So to reassure library users, could Keith Mitchell publish the figures to show that the library service is taking only its fair share of the grief and not more?
