TRAVELLERS across Oxfordshire continue to face severe disruption tonight after heavy snowfall.

Motorists face long delays on roads within the city itself and driving conditions on county roads are hazardous.

There is severe congestion on the M40 and the A34 is almost impassable in places between Chilton and Bicester.

Some motorists have abandoned their cars near the Botley interchange.

Gritters and snow ploughs are being deployed but Oxfordshire County Council has said they are struggling to get through traffic.

Councillor Ian Hudspeth, the cabinet member for infrastructure said: "We are doing are best to keep priority routes open. We understand people's frustration but it is difficult."

Oxford Bus Company will stop all services at 7pm tonight because of the winter weather conditions and Stagecoach suspended all its services earlier in the day.

Train company First Great Western has said many services will be subject to delay, alteration and cancellation.

It added: “There are reduced services operating between Bristol Temple Meads, Weston Super Mare, Worcester and Oxford.

“Services between London Paddington and Slough are also being disrupted due to signalling problems in the Southall and Hayes and Harlington areas. Delays, alterations and Cancellations can be expected.

“There are no rail replacement buses operating on any route due to the adverse weather conditions.”

Passangers at Oxford station were facing long journey times.

Chris Evans, 45, an IT manager from Charlton-on-Otmoor, set off at 11.15am for a 20th anniversary pub crawl in Bristol.

He said: "I left the car because it couldn't get up the hills. But the trains are seriously delayed.

"I don't know if I will get there tonight."
