NEW street signs are being chosen for Wallingford town centre to ensure that tourists can find their way to the town’s car parks and attractions.
The new signs will cost £60,000 and provide a major overhaul of signs in the town.
There will be nine new vehicle signs, 28 new pedestrian signs, nine new town maps and 15 new information boards.
Derrick Hoare, chairman of the Wallingford Partnership which is coordinating the initiative, said about 60 per cent of the signs would be in new locations around the town centre and the outskirts.
He added that some of the vehicle signs would direct visitors to the town’s main car parks — St Alban’s car park in Goldsmith’s Lane, the Waitrose car park off High Street and the Cattle Market car park off Wood Street.
Mr Hoare said: “People have been whingeing about the signs in Wallingford for years and now we have got a chance to do something about it.”
Will Wyllis, a member of the partnership and headteacher of Wallingford School, said: “The current system of signs in the town is completely inadequate and now there is going to be a major improvement.”
The signs will be installed in February by Wallingford Town Council using a grant from South Oxfordshire District Council and the South East England Development Agency.
