Sir – Summertown library, we are told, is to be closed next year. It is one of the few public spaces in North Oxford used five days a week by hundreds of people.
Anyone can drop in and browse or borrow books, consult newspapers and encyclopedias and access the Internet.
Under-fives and their mothers are welcome and have their own play space. The staff are always friendly and helpful.
If the cuts go ahead, they will lose their jobs and we will lose a precious community centre. I can get on a bus and go to the central library, but that is not so easy for the frail and elderly, or for people with small children.
And that’s not all. The library is the only way through to the beautiful Turrill Garden, which is also open to everyone.
All sorts of people, including those who don’t read books, drop in during their lunch hour to relax among the plants and sculptures. If the library goes, we will lose this unique garden too.
