THE Oxford Mail’s Over 60s film festival ended with a sell-out showing of Made in Dagenham yesterday.
The three-day celebration of feel-good films for the city’s senior citizens was hailed a huge success by Suzy Sheriff, manager of the Phoenix Picturehouse in Walton Street, Oxford, which co-sponsors and hosts the event.
“It was absolutely extraordinary yesterday,” she said. “We had a queue snaking its way down Walton Street.
“I’m just so sorry we couldn’t get everybody in. People had been queuing since just before 10.30am.
“We even had to send out for more mince pies.”
Mail entertainments editor Jeremy Smith added that it felt like “a movie premiere”.
He said: “Can I especially thank those who were so understanding and good-natured when told that we had run out of seats.
“One’s thing for certain – we’ll be doing this again next year.”
Entry to the festival, which this year also featured The Apartment and Coco Before Chanel, was a copy of the day’s Mail, which also entitled cinema goers to free tea, coffee and mince pies.
Among the unlucky few who couldn’t get seats were Jenny Daniel, from Summertown, and Marian Woodward, of Tubney.
They were treated to a consolation cuppa and a mince pie.
Jenny said: “It really is a lovely atmosphere.”
