Your report on Monday about the Oxford Tube bus which came off at junction 7 on the M40 and crashed, fortunately without any fatalities, reminded of the time I was on an Oxford Tube bus which also took the “scenic” route through Thame, causing some excitement among fellow passengers.
Fortunately, I knew where I was (imagine the alarm in someone coming to Britain for the first time and knowing that Thame wasn’t on their itinerary!) and was content to observe the driver find his way back on to the correct route.
The visitors may even have believed they were heading for the Thames; at least with Abingdon you know you’re on the River Thames.
With Thame, local people know they’re nowhere near the Thames and as for Thamesdown, how confusing can it get?
With Thamesdown you’re either down the river or up the creek or, if you’re a Swindon supporter, it could be worse, being up, down and without a paddle.
