CONSERVATIVE county council leader Keith Mitchell is right to expect a fight as the full impact of his party’s savage cuts becomes clear.
As he knows, there’s no need for the Government to be quite so severe – £4.7bn could be raised each year from introducing a 50 per cent tax rate on incomes over £100,000.
Another £5bn could be raised each year on a tax on vacant housing.
A ‘Robin Hood’ tax on banks could raise another £20bn a year.
All these taxation measures would be progressive in the sense they would divert wealth from the rich to the poor, in contrast to the Government’s measures, like next month’s VAT increase, which hits the poor hardest.
