I see Councillor Goddard (ViewPoints December 8) is opposing the county council’s proposals to cease funding 20 libraries where an alternative is within easy reach of public transport. I hope he realises these proposals are part of a much larger package of cuts to meet the reduction in public spending proposed by the coalition government of which his party is a member. This reduction is being made to bring the national budget back into balance after Labour’s spending binge nearly bankrupted the country.
If Cllr Goddard believes all libraries should retain their funding, he needs to tell the public where the proposed £2m cut in the library service should be made instead? Youth services? Road maintenance? Adult social care? Child protection? Come on Cllr Goddard, get off that comfortable fence and tell us how you would deliver the Liberal-Conservative coalition spending cuts.
Keith R Mitchell, Leader, Oxfordshire County Council
