TRANSPORT planners have been urged to be more radical if they want to end the “nightmare” for Oxford commuters.
Oxford City Council’s executive board has given a damning response to a new transport plan drawn up by Oxfordshire County Council.
Speaking on the LTP3 transport plan, city councillor John Tanner said its measures did not go far enough.
Mr Tanner told the meeting: “For an awful lot of people it’s a nightmare getting to and from work every single day.
“The county council’s response of saying we need more car sharing is inadequate. We need to be more radical.”
In its written response to the plan, the city council said: “The generic nature of most of the policies in this document is not especially helpful in steering future decision making.
“Most policies seem to make fairly general statements about supporting, managing or encouraging a particular approach, but are not consistently backed up with the detail of how that approach will be applied.”
The county’s transport plan sets out multi-million pound measures to ease congestion across the county up to the year 2030. But County Hall has admitted it may struggle to find money even for essential road maintenance as it looks to save £155m over the next four years.
