Sir – As a constituent of David Cameron’s I have written to him, Ed Vaizey and Jeremy Hunt in some horror about the proposal to withdraw funding to 50 per cent of the libraries in the county.
I am one of the signatories to Alan Gibbons’ open letter about library cuts, which affect the whole country.
I have written over 90 published books for teenagers and children and when I came to live in Oxfordshire ten years ago, was mistakenly relieved to give up spending all my spare time campaigning against library cuts in my London Borough of Haringey and nationwide in the Schools Library Service.
It hasn’t been plain sailing since then but it is deeply depressing to start all over again in my new home.
You can judge a nation’s commitment to education and culture by how it treats its libraries and ours is falling short of that of many less wealthy ones in the cavalier attitude to libraries displayed by the coalition. I should certainly not have had my career in literature without libraries and qualified librarians to encourage me.
