At the General Election all Lib Dem candidates signed a pledge to oppose any increase in tuition fees.
Their leaders also made a big issue about bringing trust back into politics.
To now propose, and vote for (or even not vote against) a three-fold increase in student fees is not just a betrayal of the pledge, it also makes them rank hypocrites after their call for more honesty in politics.
Don’t they see that a betrayal on this scale, and this blatant, means that all future election promises, by whatever party, will be even more meaningless.
Politicians will justifiably feel that if the Lib Dems could get away with that, then they can get away with anything.
