T HE idea of a group of parents who want to set up their own school is an intriguing one.
Louisa Nutt and others who currently home-school their children are hoping to set up their own school under new proposals from the Government.
There is a strong community and parental influence in their plans and the school will not follow the National Curriculum.
However, the success will be in the detail, as well as the long-term will and desire of parental volunteers to keep it running.
There are a lot of interesting ideas emerging from their proposal that will strike a chord with some parents — the wish to blur the boundaries between home, school and learning.
Parental involvement in the education of children is crucial.
But it would be a tragedy, that if five or 10 years down the line, the first ‘generation’ of parents had drifted away and the whole ‘business model’ was sustainable only with a healthy dose of input in time from volunteers.
But we wish them well because this is an example of David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ in the Prime Minister’s own constituency.
