CHRISTMAS shoppers in Oxford might get a shock on Sunday, as more than a thousands Santas are expected to run through the streets for charity.

The two-mile sponsored ‘Santas on the Run’ event has been organised to raise cash for city hospice Helen & Douglas House, which provides respite and end-of-life care for children and young adults from birth to the age of 35.

Last year, more than 1,300 runners took part, raising more than £50,000.

Spokesman Lin Beekar said: “It is an amazing sight, seeing so many people dressed in Santa suits running.

“It brings a feel-good factor to the day and the goodwill of people is amazing. It’s definitely not a sight you see around the city of Oxford normally.”

A similar event was due to be held on Sunday at Cornbury Park, Charlbury, but had to be cancelled due to the poor weather.

Ms Beekar said: “We are really sorry that we had to do this, and apologise to anyone that may have been inconvenienced or disappointed.

“We are now looking forward to the Oxford Santa Run on the 12th and hope that we get lots of people coming along to support the day, and Helen & Douglas House.”

Runners who were due to compete in Charlbury have been offered the chance to run on Sunday or get a full refund.

Events manager Fiona Evans said: “It is really great fun and the atmosphere is amazing, even for those just watching.

“People seem to really enjoy the event and knowing that it will help the young people and families we care for.”

The hundreds of Santas will be warming up near the Bridge of Sighs before setting off on the race from Catte Street at 9.30am.

Refreshments will be available throughout the event and each runner will get a goody bag at the end.

The races are supported by Foresters and JackFM.
