OLIVER Balicao was yesterday sentenced to nine years for raping a teenage patient and sexually assaulting another at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.
It is a long sentence passed by Judge Stephen John.
But it is not long enough.
Rape is a horrific crime, yet what Balicao has done in his position of trust as a nurse at the JR is even worse.
Not only has he damaged two women (in addition to the teenage patient he has previously been convicted of having sex with) but he has damaged his profession and the JR as a hospital.
Yes he is (hopefully) a one-off.
But there will be some women who are now scared about going to the hospital should they fall victim to someone else.
That is extremely unlikely but there are vulnerable people who may not seek the medical attention they need because of despicable Balicao.
And the appalling thing is he is still in denial. His barrister says he will “never make the same mistake again”, which underplays the severity of the widespread damage this man has done.
