DAVID and Kim Harris were determined to liven up the Catherine Wheel pub when they took it over in 1984. They had been involved in amateur dramatics for years and planned to hold regular music hall evenings and shows. They are pictured below with guitar-playing customer Malcolm Jackson.
A backwater was drained in 1967 to allow maintenance on an old dam under Clapperton’s paper mill. Villagers gathered to watch Ken Hawton, in the second picture, rescuing fish left high and dry.
The Bishop of Dorchester, the Rt Rev Kenneth Riches, consecrated a cemetery extension at St Andrew’s Church in 1954, in the third picture. The land had been given by Magdalen College, Oxford, and fenced by parish helpers.
