THIS rugby team from the City of Oxford High School enjoyed a hugely successful season.
The first XV finished the season unbeaten in 1944, winning 13 and drawing two of its 15 matches, with 352 points for and 87 against.
The picture comes from Hazel Wood, widow of John ‘Chipper’ Wood, who had an outstanding career in the sport.
As we recalled (Memory Lane, November 1), he played for Oxford Citizens RFC, Northampton, Bath and Cheltenham before emigrating in 1969 to New Zealand, where he became the rugby and athletics coach at Taupo College, on New Zealand’s North Island.
Can anyone name any of the players and staff in the photograph? Let me know.
