Greg Davies is best known as Mr Gilbert, the fearsomely whipsmart teacher in E4’s wonderfully puerile sitcom The Inbetweeners, but he’s also a rising stand-up on the comedy circuit.
As well as being part of daft sketch collective We Are Klang, he has been touring his new show Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog, which won rave reviews at this year’s Edinburgh Festival and is tipped for much more sizeable venues than Oxford’s Glee Club.
Despite measuring a giant 6ft 8in, Davies is not at all like his Inbetweeners character and is actually quite a gentle comedian. He doesn’t pick on members of the audience, nor does he fill his act with put-downs or assaults on controversial subjects. The show is a re-telling of favourite anecdotes from his life, ranging from playground nicknames to his experiences of family Christmases. He works through them chronologically, starting with his early life, going through adolescence, skipping over university, spending a lot of time on adventures from his 13 years as a drama teacher and finally to his life as an actor and stand-up.
Though the anecdotes have punch-line-like conclusions, the laughs come throughout as Davies peppers them with asides and more general gags. There aren’t many jokes you can take home to re-tell to your friends, but while you’re in Davies’s company, you’re laughing constantly. A late starter in comedy after 13 years in the classroom, he has more than enough life experience to draw on to fill his two-hour set and keeps the crowd’s attention throughout. It’s light, it’s whimsical, but it’s also really really funny.
Davies is already booking theatres for his next tour. If he returns to Oxford, chances are he’ll be in the Regal or New Theatre.
