HAVING followed Oxford Speedway for more than 50 years, it came as a great shock to hear of the death of former promoter Bernard Crapper.
Knowing Bernard for many years, I remember the wonderful conversations I had with him, friendly, jovial, with a great personality.
He was passionate about this sport. In fact, Bernard Crapper was speedway. He gave fans something they had always wanted: a successful team, the best ever Oxford side and one of the best ever seen in Great Britain.
He also gave us our first ever world champion, Hans Nielsen.
I spent many happy times with my family and friends on the terraces at Sandy Lane, but none more so than when Bernard was in charge as promoter. Thanks, BC, for those magic years at Cowley Stadium and the great memories I have.
